Medicare Plan B covers two types of services: medically¬-necessary services and preventative services. Plan B also covers medically-necessary supplies. However, the services provided must be accepted medical standards of practice.
Enrolling in Medicare Plan B
Qualifying individuals can purchase Medicare Plan B during the Initial Enrollment Period. This seven-month-long enrollment timeframe occurs three months prior to the applicant’s 65th birthday and extends three months beyond the applicant’s birth month.
Individuals who already receive Social Security or Rail Road Retirement Board (RRB) benefits automatically enroll in Medicare Part B on the first day of the month that the applicant turns 65. Anyone 65 or older but not drawing Social Security or RRB benefits can enroll in Medicare through Social Security.
Disabled applicants under the age of 65 automatically get Medicare Part B once they draw Social Security disability benefits. Most beneficiaries pay a monthly premium with an amount based on their income. Depending on income, premiums are typically deducted from monthly Social Security payments.
