Medicare Advantage policies provide additional benefits that aren’t available through Original Medicare. Beneficiaries can purchase these policies from private insurance companies and customize them to meet their specific health care needs.
There are different types of Medicare Advantage policies, including PPOs, HMOs, fee-for-service plans, special needs plans, and medical saving accounts. One of the key differences between these types of Medicare Advantage policies is how they’re covered.
A PPO provides a network of coverage, which means the beneficiary is covered by a network of physicians and facilities approved under a plan. It’s important to note that individuals that stay within the network won’t have to pay any unexpected expenses. Medicare advantage providers can charge different amounts and have different rules.
An HMO has a network of pre-approved service providers that cover beneficiaries. However, individuals must choose a primary care physician. In an HMO, the primary physician serves as both the beneficiary’s leading doctor and health care coordinator. Also, the primary physician must provide a specialist referral if necessary.
